There’s an endless list of things to see in Las Vegas. Depending on where you go, you’re going to encounter different dress codes. It’s important to know these dress codes ahead of time to ensure that you’re wearing the proper attire.

What is the Las Vegas casino dress code? While Las Vegas casinos don’t have an official dress code, the venues inside of them do. The daytime dress code is resort-casual, meaning that shorts and t-shirts are acceptable. At night, men should wear nice jeans and a collared shirt. Women should wear a dress, romper, or pants with a matching blouse.

The activities you plan on doing are going to determine what you wear for a particular day. Some places require resort casual attire, while others require business casual. This guide will help you understand the difference between the two, so you know exactly how to dress in a Las Vegas casino.

Most people don’t actually dress like this in Las Vegas.

What to Wear in Las Vegas Casinos (with Examples)

Las Vegas casinos don’t have official dress codes, so most people dress casually. Many years ago, people would dress up to go to the casino, but it’s not as common anymore.

Almost every Las Vegas casino implements a resort casual dress code. This means that you can wear almost anything, including t-shirts, shorts, and flip-flops. The vast majority of the people you encounter in Las Vegas will be wearing shorts and a t-shirt (or jeans in the winter).

This is what resort casual means:

A resort casual dress code consists of informal attire. This includes but is not limited to shorts, t-shirts, jeans, open-toed shoes and athletic footwear. Tank tops and swimwear are not permitted under a resort casual dress code.

While casinos list their dress code as resort casual, many of the high-end restaurants located in the casinos take their dress code a step further to business casual. This is what business casual means:

A business casual dress code consists of a mix of relaxed and formal attire. For men, this includes nice jeans, slacks, polos, button-down shirts, and dress shoes. For women, business casual means attire that is elegant and dressy. Sports apparel, tank tops, shorts, and opened toed shoes are prohibited.

Now let’s take a look at some real examples in the photos below. This is what the average person wears inside a Las Vegas casino.

Caesars Palace casino floor

These pictures were taken directly on the casino floor. When you look at what people actually wear, you can see it’s mostly t-shirts, shorts, and jeans. Notice how no one is wearing a suit.

Below is a picture of the Bellagio’s casino floor. As you can see, even the high-end casinos don’t enforce a strict dress code.

The only time that you would need to dress up is at night. The casino dress code is technically the same at night as it is during the day – however, many of the restaurants and bars inside the casino enforce a strict business casual dress code. So if you plan on visiting one of these venues, you’re going to want to dress up a bit.

The photo below is a good illustration of how to dress inside casinos at night.

Cosmopolitan at night

At night people dress in more formal attire. Men wear collared shirts, nice jeans, and dress shoes. Women wear dresses or jeans with a matching blouse. Most women wear heels, but flats are also acceptable.

Nowadays you won’t see too many men wearing a suit however, you can still sport one if you choose. I had a difficult time finding a real person wearing a suit, so I’ll illustrate with a stock photo. If you want to dress up, the image below is a good model to follow.

Now that we’ve covered some of the casino dress code basics, let’s dive into some of the specifics of what to wear. I’ll divide this into two sections, one for men and one for women. We’ll start with the men since they typically have the most issues when it comes to the dress code.

Las Vegas Casino Dress Code for Guys

Shirts

During the day, t-shirts and tank tops are perfectly acceptable to wear. However, at night you’re going to want to wear a collared shirt (either a polo or button-down shirt) at the minimum. You may not be able to get into restaurants if you’re still wearing a t-shirt.

Pants

While in a casino, most men in Las Vegas wear shorts during the day. You can wear them at night as well, but again you’ll have trouble getting into restaurants and bars. I recommend wearing a pair of fashion-forward jeans (meaning non-baggy) or slacks at night.

Shoes

While the sun is up, you can wear anything from flip-flops and sandals to sneakers and loafers. After dark, you’re going to want to opt for a pair of dress shoes or dress boots. You won’t get kicked out of the casino for wearing flip-flops however, you won’t be able to get seated at a restaurant.

Can you wear shorts?

Shorts are ok to wear on the casino floor during the day. You can wear them at night too, but you’ll have trouble getting into some restaurants.

Can you wear jeans?

Besides shorts, jeans are the most common thing you’ll see men wearing in Las Vegas casinos. They are certainly allowed both day and night.

Can you wear a hat?

All casinos in Las Vegas will allow you to wear a hat on the casino floor. However, you will have to take it off before entering bars, nightclubs, and some high-end restaurants.

Can you wear a hoodie?

Hoodies are allowed to be worn in casinos without issue. However, they are not allowed into nightclubs and bars. If you need to ditch your hoody, you can leave it with the bellhop by the front desk.

Las Vegas Casino Dress Code for Ladies

Dresses

During the day, ladies have a lot of flexibility when in what they can wear in the casino. Anything from shorts, rompers, skirts, and sundresses will all work. At night, you’ll see the vast majority of women wearing a cocktail dress.

Pants

If you don’t want to wear a dress while gambling during the day, jeans, yoga pants, and dress pants are also an option. All you have to do is pair them with a blouse or t-shirt. At night, jeans and dress pants are sufficient however, you may have issues getting into bars and higher-end restaurants if you wear yoga pants. A nice blouse is also a recommended upgrade over a t-shirt.

Shoes

Women can wear all types and styles of footwear inside casinos, including heels, wedges, flats, sandals, sneakers, and boots. At night, it’s best to stick with heels or a formal pair of flats.

Can you wear flip flops?

It’s acceptable to wear flip-flops on the casino floor in Las Vegas. However, bars, nightclubs, and high-end restaurants may refuse to let you enter if you’re wearing flip-flops. For this reason, it’s best to wear closed-toed shoes at night.

Can you wear a swimsuit?

Many people enter the casino wearing a swimsuit right after leaving a pool party. It’s important to have a romper, sarong, a flowy tunic, or a pair of shorts to cover up your bathing suit. If not, you will not be allowed into the casino. Also, if your coverup is too revealing, you may be asked to leave.

What Not to Wear a Hotel or Casino

When it comes to the casino floor in Las Vegas, there isn’t much that guests are prohibited from wearing. There are only a few items that would raise a red flag. A few of them include:

  • Overly revealing swimwear
  • Clothing with excessive rips and tears
  • Anything with offensive language or graphics

Las Vegas Show Dress Code

Shows and restaurants have separate dress codes in Las Vegas as well. If you’re not sure what to wear in Vegas to a show, I recommend you check out this article. That post also covers what clothes to wear in Las Vegas every month of the year.

What to Wear to a Las Vegas Bar, Nightclub & Pool

Nightclubs have the strictest dress codes of any venue in Las Vegas. To make matters more complicated, every club has its own dress code rules. So to help you figure out what to wear, I put together complete Las Vegas nightclub dress code guides for men and women here. The pool party dress code is covered in that article as well.

How the Weather Impacts What to Wear in Vegas

Summertime temperatures in Vegas often get above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re visiting Las Vegas in the summer, make sure you pack light clothing. Vegas casinos are air-conditioned but the heat outside is still unbearable.

If you visit Las Vegas in the winter, you’ll want to ensure that you pack some warmer clothing. The weather isn’t too extreme, but nighttime temperatures often drop below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Your hotel will be heated, but Vegas tends to get windy in the winter.

Vegas casinos won’t have an issue with you wearing a jacket if the temperatures drop outside. Although, you may want to take it off once you’re inside the casino.

Las Vegas temperatures in the spring and fall are very mild. Dress in whatever you feel most comfortable wearing (as the outfit meets the Las Vegas dress codes).
